• Mexico has committed to international methane reduction goals, including the Global Methane Pledge and a 2023 agreement with Canada and the U.S. to lower waste sector methane emissions by 15% by 2030. Additionally, the LGCC set a 28% GHG mitigation target for the waste sector.
• Significant barriers to methane reduction in Mexico include a lack of reliable data on waste volumes, inadequate source separation of organic waste, limited financing capacity for municipalities, and a lack of market incentives for anaerobic digesters and landfill gas.
