PFAS Alert For Physicians & Health Care Professionals

PFAS are a class of over 4,700 synthetic chemicals linked to various severe health conditions, including cancer and immune suppression. In Canada, 98.5% of a national sample had at least three types of PFAS in their blood, with vulnerable populations disproportionately affected. The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) urges the Canadian government to finalize the listing of PFAS as toxic substances under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) to enable comprehensive regulation and banning.

• PFAS are a group of more than 4,700 synthetic chemicals used in diverse products such as personal care items, textiles, cookware, and firefighting foam due to their stability and resistance to water, oil, grease, dirt, and stains.
• Exposure to these 'forever chemicals' is linked to a wide range of health issues, including cancer, thyroid disease, liver toxicity, cardiovascular disease, asthma, Alzheimer’s disease, infertility, immune suppression, and low infant birth weight.
