Joint Letter to Government: LNG Flaring Violations and Risks in BC

A joint letter from 54 organizations calling for an independent health impact assessment and the suspension of public financial support for LNG projects due to excessive flaring and emissions at the LNG Canada facility in Kitimat, BC.

• The LNG Canada facility in Kitimat is reportedly exceeding its monthly authorized emissions by an average of 40 times, resulting in excess flaring that exposes local residents to toxic air pollutants, including black carbon and benzene.
• There is currently no cumulative, independent health impacts assessment for LNG Canada Phase 1, and the company has estimated it will take three years to resolve the equipment problems causing the emissions.
• The authors argue that federal definitions of “low-carbon LNG” are insufficient because they exclude methane leakage, upstream extraction, pipeline transport, and end-use combustion from their accounting.
