CropLife’s role in public policy development

Environmental organizations are calling for a review of CropLife's role in Canadian federal policy development following reports of a 'tiger team' that co-developed regulatory guidance on Plants with Novel Traits.

• Environmental organizations express concern over reports that CropLife and the Canada Grains Council worked directly with Agriculture and Agri-food Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and Health Canada to "co-develop" updated CFIA guidance on Plants with Novel Traits.
• The authors allege that an industry-government “tiger team” appears to have intervened behind the scenes regarding Health Canada guidance on the Novelty Interpretation of Products of Plant Breeding, 2022, raising concerns about regulatory capture.
• The signatories request transparency regarding the number of industry-government working groups, their participants, and terms of reference affecting processes such as the Pest Management Regulatory Agency transformation agenda, the Sustainable Agricultural Strategy, and the Biodiversity Strategy related to Target 7 of the Montreal-Kunming Global Biodiversity Framework.
