Avis d’objection à la décision de réévaluation RDV2017-01 sur le Glyphosate

This document is a formal statement of objection submitted by Louise Vandelac and Marie-Hélène Bacon on behalf of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment. It challenges the decision RDV2017-01 by Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA/ARLA) to renew the registration of glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) for approximately 15 years. The authors argue that the scientific basis for the decision is outdated, overly reliant on confidential industry data, and ignores recent independent research regarding human health, food contamination, and environmental impacts.

Specifically, they state that the 'toxicological hazards' section uses 118 references, 80.5% of which were produced before 1996, representing less than 0.049% of the 2,400 glyphosate-related articles found in Pubmed between 1975 and April 2017.
• The document argues that the PMRA failed to adequately assess professional and dietary risks. The professional risk assessment is said to rely on only one industry document from 2001 and one EPA reference from 2012 regarding residential exposure, which the authors claim does not cover the primary risks to farmers. The dietary risk assessment is criticized for relying on 340 confidential industry documents, 70% of which date from before 2000, and for ignoring the structural increase in GBH use.
• The authors highlight a significant gap between Canadian and Quebec standards for aquatic life and drinking water. They note that Canada's chronic aquatic life criteria for glyphosate (800 µg/l) are 12 times higher than Quebec's (65 µg/l). Furthermore, they cite a study by Séralini et al. (2014) suggesting that concentrations as low as 0.1 ppb can induce severe hormone-dependent disturbances, contrasting this with Quebec's drinking water standard of 210 µg/l and Health Canada's recommendation of 280 µg/l.
