An open letter from a coalition of organizations and individuals to Canadian ministers urging the expansion of the single-use plastics ban to achieve zero plastic waste by 2030.

• The current ban on single-use plastics in Canada is insufficient, covering only approximately 3 per cent of the plastic waste generated across the country.
• The signatories call for the expansion of the ban to include six specific categories of manufactured single-use plastic items: takeout containers, cups and lids; bottles and caps; sachets, pouches and wrappers; bags, film and wrap; filtered cigarettes; and produce stickers.
• The letter demands the elimination of specific problematic polymers (PVC, Polystyrene, Polyurethanes, and fluorinated polymers), chemical additives (including PFAS, Phthalates, Bisphenols, Brominated flame retardants, Chlorinated paraffins, and Benzotriazole UV stabilizers), and certain products such as "flushables" and plastics labeled as "biodegradable," "compostable," or "oxo-degradable."
• The authors argue that downstream management is inadequate to curb pollution and that a reduction in plastic production is necessary to protect human health, wildlife, ecosystems, and the climate.
