Progressive voters want action on methane and wildfires

A report by the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, based on a Nanos Research survey of 1,015 Canadians in October 2025, finds broad public support for climate action, specifically regarding the regulation of oil and gas methane emissions and the reduction of health risks associated with wildfires and heat waves.

• A significant majority of Canadians view climate change as a priority for the federal government, with 65.4% rating it as "Important" compared to 8.5% who view it as "Not important". This sentiment is even stronger among Liberal/NDP swing voters, where 76.5% view it as important and only 1.7% view it as not important.
• There is a strong sense of urgency regarding government action to mitigate the health risks of climate change, such as heat waves and wildfires. Nationally, 75.2% of Canadians consider this an urgent or somewhat urgent priority, while 18.3% consider it not urgent or somewhat not urgent. Among Liberal-NDP swing voters, the urgency is higher, with 89.4% viewing it as urgent or somewhat urgent.
• Public support for new standards to regulate methane emissions from the oil and gas sector is high. 64.5% of Canadians support or somewhat support such regulations, while 15.3% oppose or somewhat oppose them. Support is particularly high among NDP/Liberal swing voters, at 78.5%.
• The survey identified specific voter personas to analyze perceptions: "People who consider voting BOTH NDP and Liberal" (representing 24.6% of Canadians) and "People who are progressive and voted Liberal" (representing 34.5% of Canadians).
