Time to Protect Alberta Children from Pesticides

A statement by the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) calling for restrictions on the non-essential and cosmetic use of pesticides in Alberta to protect children's health, noting a lack of such protections in cities like Calgary and Edmonton compared to other Canadian communities.

• While approximately 80 per cent of Canadians reside in communities with restrictions on non-essential pesticide use for lawns and gardens, such protections are absent in Edmonton, Calgary, and the majority of other Alberta cities and towns.
• Pesticide exposure is linked to significant health risks, particularly for children, including birth defects, low birth weights, learning disabilities, and delays in motor development. In adults, exposure is associated with neurological impacts and various cancers.
• A 2016 poll conducted for CAPE indicated that more than 60 per cent of Albertans are concerned about the health risks of pesticides and support increased restrictions on their cosmetic use within their communities.
