Protecting our health from toxics: 3 questions that need answers before election day

The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE), through its Coalition for Action on Toxics (CAT), has issued three critical questions to federal political parties ahead of an election to address the health and justice impacts of toxic substances in Canada.

• The Coalition for Action on Toxics (CAT) has challenged federal political parties to provide answers on three specific policy areas: reinforcing the Zero Plastic Waste agenda to end plastic pollution by 2040, expediting the phase-out of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and providing long-term funding for the Chemicals Management Plan.
• Toxic exposures, including PFAS in non-stick pans, microplastics in soil, and benzene in the air, are linked to chronic illness, reproductive harm, hormone disruption, and cancer.
• There is significant public support for federal regulatory action under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) regarding chemicals of concern; 88% of people in Canada support the federal government removing harmful chemicals.
• Pollution and hazardous exposures disproportionately affect specific groups, including women, gender-diverse people, disabled and poor communities, racialized people, and Indigenous, frontline, and vulnerable communities.
• The author expresses concern that toxic substances were omitted from the environment segment of the leaders' debate, arguing that Canada requires a justice-centered toxics strategy grounded in science and partnership with Indigenous communities.
