Life in plastic is NOT fantastic!

The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) warns of a health crisis driven by rising plastic production and its associated greenhouse gas emissions, calling for the Government of Canada to commit to production limits and the elimination of hazardous chemicals within a Global Plastics Treaty.

• Plastic production is currently at 460 million tonnes per year and is the fastest-growing source of global industrial greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a health crisis linked to adverse health outcomes and environmental injustice.
• CAPE is urging the Government of Canada to secure a Global Plastics Treaty and national policies that include limiting global plastic production, eliminating unnecessary plastic products, prohibiting hazardous chemicals (such as phthalates, bisphenols, PFAS, flame retardants, and heavy metals), and protecting vulnerable populations.
• Following a letter sent on September 20, 2024, to Minister Guilbeault, CAPE noted that the Minister's subsequent statement lacked production commitments. CAPE intends to send two affiliated physicians to the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) in Busan, Republic of Korea, from November 25th to December 1st, 2024.
