MAPUTO MANIFESTO 2024

The Maputo Manifesto 2024 is a statement issued following the 4th African Conference on Debt and Development (AfCoDD IV) held in Maputo from 28 to 30 August 2024. The document advocates for a feminist approach to debt and development in Africa, arguing that the current debt crisis disproportionately affects women and girls and is exacerbated by a global financial architecture that prioritizes profit over people.

• The manifesto proposes a radical shift toward a feminist economic model that prioritizes social justice and the 'economies of care'. Key recommendations include debt cancellation and restructuring based on social and gender impacts, the dismantling of patriarchal and neocolonial structures, and the formation of a unified African front in international negotiations to challenge the Global North.
• Short-term action priorities include gathering gender-specific research and disaggregated data, launching campaigns to abolish laws and cultural practices that sustain gender inequality, and establishing a Working Group to implement a measurable action plan for evaluation at annual forums.
